1 John 5:14-21; Psalm 149; John 3:22-30
In our text today from St John’s first letter we are told to pray to God for what we need safe in the knowledge that he will hear and will answer us. He also tells us that we belong to God and not to this earth but that we must be wary of the false gods who will keep us tied to the things of this earth and not to our true God in heaven. One of the main themes of the letter we now conclude comes through: sin should have no place in the life of a Christian. In the gospel we read of John the Baptist’s continuing testimony to Jesus. He tells his listeners that Jesus must grow greater as he, John, must decrease in popularity. This is because his job of preparing the way for Jesus has finished.
